The Story:
Get hooked on a girl named Fred…
HE said: Fred Oday is a girl? Puh-leeze. Why is a girl taking my best
friend's spot on the boys' varsity golf team?
SHE said: Can I seriously do this? Can I join the boys' team? Everyone
will hate me—especially Ryan Berenger.
HE said: Coach expects me to partner with Fred on the green? That is
crazy bad. Fred's got to go—especially now that I can't get her out of my head.
So not happening.
SHE said: Ryan can be nice, when he's not being a jerk. Like the time
he carried my golf bag. But the girl from the rez and the spoiled rich boy from
the suburbs? So not happening.
But there's no denying that things are happening as the girl with the
killer swing takes on the boy with the killer smile…
My Review: Loved it!! Wow! First off, a girl named Fred?! Well, that's just the nickname, but better than her full name. And she is scouted by the local high school golf coach. Fred lives on the reservation, and attened the public school, but stayed to herself. Then when the coach sees her at the golf course - because that's where her dad works - he wants her to be on the all boys golf team. That ends up sending a ripple effect through the team and the school. I was hooked.... pun totally intended, from the very begininng!
Interview with Fred Oday
Did you ever figure out how Ryan knew what golf shoes you
were looking at?
Eventually. When Mom saw the new golf shoes she said, “So
that’s what the White Boy was fishing around about.” I hate when she uses that term but that’s
Mom. When we were in the hospital
visiting Dad after his heart attack, Ryan asked Mom for my shoe size. Mom thought that was pretty weird but, truth
be told, she thinks a lot of white people are weird. But she’s starting to warm up to Ryan a
little.
Have the boys finally realized how much of a jerk they
were being, when you won the golf game?
Yes and
no. Some have accepted me on the team; others haven’t but at least the pranks
have stopped. It’s still a struggle fitting
in but I don’t let it get to me like I did when I first joined the team. I just concentrate on winning games and
improving my scores. I can’t make people
like or respect me, least of all the boys on the golf team. I figure that will have to come with
time. And just because they were jerks,
doesn’t mean I will be.
What do you want to study in college?
I love
school so that is a hard question. My
two favorite subjects are English and Chemistry. I would love to create or be something that
would be useful to my tribe, the Gila River Indian Community.
Are you hoping for some new golf clubs, or do you want to
keep yours?
Coach Lannon
keeps bugging me about getting new clubs but I tell him that I’ve come this far
with the used clubs that Dad got me, why change it? Besides, golf clubs are expensive and money
is always tight.
Are things better for you and Ryan? ;)
We’ve gotten closer since Dad’s heart
attack. We pretty much spend all of our
free time together, which has been kind of an adjustment since I was always so
used to being alone. We golf every
weekend together too and he’s been out to our house for a barbecue a few times. So far, we’re not driving each other crazy or
anything. Truth is, I’d be crazy without him.
Thanks
Fred!
