My Review: YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. I could honestly stop there and not say anymore. Cindy Bennett is BRILLIANT in capturing the emotion and the life of being a teenager in high school. What she put into this book could just about be related to by any person that has ever been in high school and felt like they did not belong.
I can honestly say if I had the chance to redo high school, I totally would not. High School is one of the toughest "rites of passage" in my opinion. Are you a jock, a geek, in the band, a cheerleader, a misfit, not afraid to talk to anyone, afraid to talk to everyone or just biding your time until the next bell rings? Yes, you are in high school if you answered "yes" to any of those. High school is TOUGH! So when you do find your place in high school, how far will you go to stay in that "label" and try to bring others over to your "side"? Jen wanted to find out!
Jen made a bet with her friends that she could transform geek/nerd Trevor into someone she would be proud to be seen with. Her rebelling and partying lifestyle has gotten boring so she is ready for a new challenge.
Jen does not realize that Trevor has a great family, great friends and great tastes. Is Jen really hanging out with her family bowling and enjoying it? What happens when Jen's life is turned upside down when Trevor finds out about the bet?
I started reading this book while sitting in the middle of a corn field. My kids were taking their first combine ride and I waited patiently for them to be done. I spread out my blanket on the cut cornstalks and opened up my book. I got to read for about an hour that seemed like 10 minutes. We finished our running that day and did our normal Saturday errands. After supper, I could not wait to dive back into Geek Girl. I ended up staying up until 300am Sunday morning. I could not put the book down and did not want to! I laughed, cried, held my breathe and wished and hoped. What an amazing story. I love the message this books sends out to everyone! I will not tell you that message. You will know what I mean when you read the book! Seriously...you have to read this book!! I could not loan this book out fast enough after I read it.
December 8th 2011 Geek Girl comes out in paperback. Get your copy ASAP!!

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one! I've had a copy for a while (from when it was self-pubbed) but I only read it last month. It was very well written and I do agree that Bennett did a great job capturing emotions! Yay for Contemporary YA! :D

ReplyDeleteThis definitely sounds like a great read. And interesting that, for once, it's not the girl at the center of the bet (i.e., She Who Needs To Change Herself to Satisfy Others Expectations), but a guy--like in Pretty Woman or She's All That).
