Three Delays by Charlie Smith Release Date: May 18, 2010
Publisher: Harper Perennial
Genre: Adult Fiction
The Story: Billy Brent and Alice Stephens are star-crossed like all great lovers. Their need for each other drives them from Istanbul to Miami, Venice to Mexico. After years of encounters and escapes, they lose themselves deep in a desert wilderness, searching for a way forward, only to learn that sometimes the trail simply forks.
My Review: When I first started this book, I really thought I was going to love it but the further I got in, the less connected to the story I became. Billy's addiction problem became tiring for me and I had a hard time wanting to cheer for a couple who just couldn't stop destroying one another. Despite the years that have passed and the trouble Billy and Alice obviously have together they just can't seem to get enough of one another. The phrase "misery loves company" seems to fit awfully well with their situation. Neither character is particularly likable and the fact that Alice is married doesn't help my opinion of her.
The author has a gift for writing beautiful scenes and the imagery was amazing at times. I tried to let myself get carried away in those moments but in the end it just wasn't enough to make me fall in love with the book.
